Cortisol #
Stress Hormones released by the Adrenal Glands.
- Optimal cortisol levels in the AM is 16-18mcg. In the evening, it should be at or below 3. (source needed; I forgot)
- Stimulated by light.
- Spikes up and peaks at dawn, and increasing furthermore upon awakening, then decreases just as fast, and tapers off for the rest of the day.
- By increasing Protein turnover, cortisol is thermogenic. (The replacement of older proteins as they are broken down within the cell. There is a balance to be maintained between anabolism and catabolism. Decreases with age.)
- Increases Blood Glucose and leads to insulin resistance; low cortisol can lead to hypoglycemia.
- Increases Ghrelin and Leptin release, but also promotes leptin resistance; leptin and cortisol are inversely related.
- Increases the release of fatty acids from the adipose tissue and amino acid mobilization from muscle (between meals).
- So, excess cortisol raises body fat.
- Cortisol contributes to lowering Histamine levels. When your cortisol is too high, your Thyroid is low, and then you’re fucking your liver, and since estrogen is mainly detoxified in the liver, your estrogen and histamine rises, and your thyroid stays low, since that is where T4 is converted to T3.
- Inhibits T4->T3 Conversion
- Potentiates the effects of thyroid hormones, though.
- Depletes Magnesium and Copper, chronic stress especially the latter.
- Antiinflammation
- Pregnenolone, Progesterone, and Thyroid lower cortisol, and cortisol lowers progesterone, and maybe pregnenolone, too.
- Elevated cortisol can reduce TSH, via suppressing the hypothalamic-pituitary-axis (HPA).
- Induces an increase in SERT expression.
High cortisol #
- After breakfast, if you cool down andor the pulse slows, that is a sign of high cortisol, and possibly Hypothyroidism. Ideally, Temperature and Pulse are supposed to rise after breakfast. Some hypothyroid people don’t compensate for their low pulse with adrenaline, for whatever reason, so eating will increase their temperature and pulse.
- Deficiency in Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, can increase cortisol.
- Chronically excessive cortisol tends to suppress Adrenaline.
- Inability to fall asleep, poor sleep, frequent awakening, not much deep sleep (feels like your hovering close to wakefulness), sleep-disordered breathing, etc (R)
- Tiredness after a meal
- Blurry vision and eye floaters
- Hypertension
- Chronic inflammation. Although cortisol is anti-inflammatory in the short term, in the long term it promotes neurological inflammation and CRH (released by the hypothalamus) is also highly inflammatory.
- Weight gain around the midsection
- Cushing’s syndrome (extreme)
- Central obesity (metabolic syndrome)
- Frequent urination
- Suppressed immune system
- Inability to detox – liver dysfunction
- Muscle weakness
- Muscle wasting or it’s very hard to put on muscle
- Cognitive dysfunction – memory loss, struggling to focus, low creativity, etc.
- Panic, OCD, PTSD, neuroticism
- Melancholic depression
- Irritability/anger
- Diabetes
Low cortisol #
… and low thyroid/high estrogen/serotonin/endotoxin… https://thingsvarious.medium.com/cortisol-adrenals-af3ba8af54e8
- Cortisol regulates the retention of water and sodium, so with low cortisol, one may have Blood Pressure or Muscle weakness.
In general, people with low levels of cortisol feel “like crap” in the morning, whereas people with low levels of thyroid hormones rather feel groggy and sleepy (but not “like crap”). During the day, with low levels of thyroid hormones, people get lethargic and sleepy at rest, whereas with low levels of cortisol people feel best when resting.
- Poor sleep and waking up tired in the mornings
- Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss
- Low blood sugar
- Hypo-tension, dizziness, nausea, light-headed
- Fatigue
- Weak immune system
- Gain weight easily
- Low body temperate and hypothyroid
- Smooth flat looking muscles (also due to too little DHEA)
- Salt craving
- Easy infections and inflammation (also include too low aldosterone and elevated CRH)
- Increase in skin pigmentation (due to elevated ACTH)
- Sudden severe headache, loss of vision or visual field defect
- Autoimmune manifestations (vitiligo)
- Psychiatric symptoms (memory impairment, depression, anxiety, psychosis, reduced consciousness, delirium), impaired cognition
- Reduce blood bicarbonate and increased metabolic acidosis
Increase cortisol with:
- Magnesium: Anti-stress, lets the adrenal gland recover.
- Maca root: Increases cellular uptake and effectiveness of hormones.
- Vitamin C: Reduces the body’s need for cortisol, helps the adrenal gland recover.
- Pregnenolone, as it is a precursor to all steroids, including cortisol.

- Cortisol does not ‘steal’ pregnenolone, though.
