Vitamin E #
-
Any of the four tocopherols or four tocotrienols are considered ‘vitamin E’. This includes: α-tocopherol, β-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol and δ-tocopherol.
-
With adequate vitamin E levels, FSH and Luteinizing Hormone rose significantly in pituitary tissue, not plasma. Testosterone significantly elevated in testicular tissue and plasma. Supposedly, haidut got to 1500ng/dl naturally by ultradosing vitamin E.
-
Increases Luteinizing Hormone receptor sensitivity; aids in steroidogenesis.
-
Deficiency leads to significantly lower cAMP.
-
Lowers Prolactin, but not very significantly in normal men, I guess.
-
Estrogen receptor antagonist, and blocks Aromatase. (2500mg to antagonize estrogen by 65%)
-
Along with selenium, induces apoptosis.
-
Prevents Calcium deposits like kidney stones from occuring.
-
Deficiency exacerbates Iron excess; iron interferes with E uptake/absorption.
-
Supplementation can attenuate the effects of Zinc deficiency.
-
High levels of vitamin E reduce Vitamin D uptake, specifically in the intestine.
-
Works synergistically with Vitamin C for antioxidant defense.
-
Large doses can inhibit Lipolysis.
-
Barrie Tan believes tocopherols don’t need to be supplemented as they can build up in the body and become toxic, rather it’s the tocotrenols. TP will degrade TT if taken together though. He most likely has a corporate interest. R
Supplementation #
100-200 IU per day is well-tolerated and safe, but 400-600 IU weekly is plenty to protect from PUFA.
- High levels of vitamin E reduce Vitamin D uptake and vice versa, specifically in the intestine.
- Can inhibit absorption and uptake of Vitamin K, and deplete it.
- Tomato paste! Cranberry juice.
Formulations #
Alpha tocopherol (alone) can be dangerous.
- Tocovit seems to be some of the best around. 750x30 IU.
- Mixed tocopherols extracted from wheat germ as opposed to soi :O.
- Has “impurities”, those being long-chain fatty acids = policosanol. Has a high proportion of α-tocopherol.
- α: 62~65%
- β: 5~12%
- γ: 18~20%
- δ: 8~10%
- Healthnatura Whole E mixed tocopherols (α, β, γ, δ 76%) derived from soy $25
- 2… pumps? 80-87 per container.
- α: 136.5 IU (91mg) (12%)
- β: 5.4mg (0.7%)
- γ: 468mg (61.3%)
- δ: 198mg (26%)
- Ultimate Gamma
- α: 11.2%
- β+δ: 5.6%
- γ: 83.3%
- Unique E
- α: 38.2%
- β+δ: 18.8%
- γ: 42.8%
