Calcium

Calcium #

  • Can decrease B2 absorption, competes with Zinc, high levels of calcium decreased tissue levels of Magnesium and exacerbates deficiency.
  • High levels of calcium decrease absorption of non-heme Iron.
  • High levels of calcium decrease Phosphorus absorption
  • Lowers Prolactin, and vice versa. One of the main functions of prolactin is removing calcium from the bone.

Serum levels ~9mg/dL are ideal. (4/12 I got 9.7 (RI 8.7-10.2))

  • Calcium D-glucarate can help with phase II liver detoxification of Estrogen, but it also ends up ‘detoxing’ other beneficial steroids.

Milk-alkali syndrome #

  • The lower threshold for calcium intake associated with calcium-alkali syndrome may be due to increased Vitamin D intake resulting in enhanced intestinal calcium absorption
  • Was traditionally associated with elevated serum phosphate, but is now associated with low serum levels - this is a result of the phosphate-binding capacity of calcium carbonate and other calcium-containing supplements.
  • levels of 1,25-hydroxyVitamin D are generally low in calcium-alkali syndrome because Parathyroid Hormone is suppressed

Supplementation #

  • the peak absorption of calcium occurs at around a 400 mg calcium load and then it levels off. Absorption of calcium may be as high as 60% at very low intake and as low as 20% at a high intake 1200mg minimum per day. 2g-3g is a good idea.
  • Blackstrap molasses is a good source (200mg/tbsp & 0.5mg manganese & 20% Fe (25% RDI) & 12g sugar). Chickpeas might be a good source too.
  • Calcium acetate?
  • Calcium ascorbate?
  • Natural Calcium - Pure Marine Source?
  • Stinging nettle infusion
  • Moringa
  • Coral calcium, say from Now. Really rich actually.

Carbonate #

  • RP: It’s a very effective, but safe supplement, because the carbonic acid…the carbon dioxide is the form that stimulates bone formation rather than breaking down the bone.
  • Calcium carbonate is an antacid, neutralizing stomach acidity. In the kidney and urinary tract, this is once again a great problem. Basically what eggshells are made of. Not water soluble at all
  • https://raypeatforum.com/community/threads/pain-in-my-side-from-calcium.31782/post-478537 Amazoniac
    • Dissociates in the stomach acid, whereby free calcium can react. Can make you constipated.
    • Citrate is safer, since it has an affinity for cations preventing the calcium from complexing as oxalate.
  • Buy calcium carbonate powder (NOW makes an affordable one), Put 1/3 teaspoon into a cup, Add 1/3 teaspoon potassium/sodium bicarbonate, Add 1 teaspoon glycine, Fill cup with sparkling water, Wait until fizzing stops, Add 1 teaspoon fruit vinegar with mother, Stir, Drink before meals, No digestion issues
  • CLASH mixes it with ascorbic acid - which creates carbonation and makes the ascorbid acid buffered - into a cup of orange/grape juice.
  • Excessive consumption (4g+ daily) can cause milk-alkali syndrome.
  • Increased risk of urinary tract infection associated with the use of calcium supplements

Acetate #

Pretty rare, besides as powder. https://www.bulksupplements.com/products/calcium-acetate

Citrate #

  • Redsun’s prefered form. as carbonate reduces stomach acid.
  • I think it’s Amazoniac’s favorite as well, even though Ray Peat doesn’t like it.
