Zinc #

Zinc deficiency reduces the serum levels and cellular entry of Calcium]]. Similar to vitamin A and K; they compete for absorption yet a deficiency will fuck up the other.

  • Inhibits Copper absorption and Manganese uptake

  • Zinc is a positive allosteric modulator of the beta 2 adrenergic receptor, increasing the affinity of epinephrine for this receptor.

    • When beta 2 receptor activates, it inhibits histamine release from mast cells. Anything that increases catecholamines (norepinephrine, epinephrine) helps high histamine types. Caffeine is an example.
  • Zinc intake is significantly correlated with total free Testosterone and DHT. R R R

  • Excess zinc can cause buildup of metallothionein in the stomach lining, preventing proper copper absorption from food, which will obviously fuck you up.

Antagonizes NMDAR. This is thought to be the main mechanism explaining the antidepressant properties of zinc. R R R

  • Zinc intake only lasts for most of the day - It can’t build up, like eating oysters once a week or something. Eating a little bit each day, in 2 meals, is the better route.

Supplementation #

  • Best form of supplementation is probably chelated zinc glycinate or carnosine (also chelated).
  • Ray said 50mg of picolinate would be dangerous; it can oxidize other nutrients in the stomach/intestine?
  • Applying topically to the scalp can lead to a loss in color, due to copper deficiency - topical copper can restore hair color.
  • Chris Masterjohn recommends monomathiamine, citrate, gluconate, acetate, sulfate. He recommends against picolinate and oxide.
    • His opinion on picolinate is controversial. It has more absorption, but more also gets urinated out. Gotta look further into it.
    • He says you can’t absorb more than 7mg every 5 hours. Find the lowest dose possible and take it on an empty stomach.

    • Zinc sulphate turned out great for this guy, in liquid form (metagenics zinc drink, apparently doesn’t need stomach acid to be absorbed) (there’s no taste.)
  • MicroZinc. Without the cap? Sold on ND
