Taurine

Taurine #

Taurine is an abundant amino acid found throughout the body, but especially saturates in tissues containing excitable cells, such as nerves or heart muscle.

  • (Taurine transporter: SLC6A6)

  • Taurine enhances the sexual response and mating ability in aged male rats

  • The effect of taurine on motor behaviour, body temperature and monoamine metabolism in rat brain

    • DOPA formation was significantly enhanced. Dopamine depletion induced by α-methyltyrosine (Tyrosine Hydroxylase inhibitor) was significantly retarded, whereas noradrenaline depletion was enhanced. (Does this indicate a preference for retention of DA?)
    • Increased endogenous levels of dopamine, whereas tyrosine, tyrptophan, noradrenaline, and 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels remained unchanged.
    • Causes inhibition of firing in central DA neurons [how? why?], but has the opposite effect on NA.
  • Taurine diminished the apparent affinity of NMDAR to glycine in the presence of spermine. R

  • "(100mg/kg/day p.o.) Taurine reversed nandrolone decanoate-induced perturbations in sperm characteristics, normalized serum testosterone level, and restored the activities of the key steroidogenic enzymes; 3β-HSD, and 17β-HSD." R

  • Pharmacological characterization of GABAA receptors in taurine-fed mice

    • We reported that GABA-A receptors were down regulated with chronic administration of taurine
  • Glycation inhibitor.

  • Improves NO-mediated relaxations of corpus cavernosum in diabetics rats probably by inhibiting NADPH Oxidase/Rho kinase pathways. R

  • Agonizes GABA-A. I think it increases Alpha waves

  • Increases brain Acetylcholine

  • Keeps the temperature stable, anti-inflammatory, keeps calcium balanced (flushes out excess), Antioxidant, Balances electrolytes, anxiolytic, lowers neuroinflammation, anti-diabetic, antiarrhythmic.

  • Heals the Liver, activates autophagy, diuretic, protects against fluoride, increases BDNF, decreases cortisol.

  • Supports heart health by regulating fibrosis and reducing oxidative stress and vascular resistance, and blocks sympathetic nerve activity.

  • Is a component of Bile acid, so supports digestion and detoxification of that which is excreted through it, like Estrogen. This also increases cholesterol utilization.

  • Inhibits Lactate Dehydrogenase

  • Inhibits SREBP

  • Increases LTP/neurogenesis in striatum/hippocampus (increases stem cells and progenitor cells)

  • Membrane stabilization

  • Protection against glutamate excitotoxicity (reduces intracellular free calcium and is an antioxidant)

  • No effect on choline/phospholipid status, but increased taurine concentrations in tissues may affect oxidation status when methionine availability is low. R

    • I have stil heard it has anticholinergic properties though

Supplementation #

  • 1-hour half life. Tissue saturation can be achieved for months but I’ll have to look into that
