Methionine
#
- Once it donates its methyl group, methionine becomes Homocysteine.
- Anti-folate, adding a methyl group to help histamine mobilization.
- As a methyl donor, it is used to create polyamines, Creatine, and Phosphatidylcholine.
- Readily
Restriction #
- Short-term methionine deprivation improves metabolic health via sexually dimorphic, mTORC1-independent mechanisms - in obese, prediabetic mice.
- The most lifespan-decreasing amino acid, followed by Tryptophan.
- Low methionine ingestion extends lifespan.
-
Methionine restriction increases blood glutathione and longevity in F344 rats
- All changes occured 2 months after starting the diet. 0.17% methionine and 3.39% glutamic acid, control being 0.86 met and 2.70% glu.
- Restricting methionine in rats resulted in 44% increase in lifespan
- Increased blood levels of 81% mature rats and 164% for elderly. Reduced hepatic Glutathione by 40%, and 25 decrease in kidney.
-
Implementation of dietary methionine restriction using casein after selective, oxidative deletion of methionine
- Methionine is readily degraded to methionine sulfoxide by H2O2.

Toxicity of Various Organic Sulfur Compounds for Chicks Fed Crystalline Amino Acid Diets Containing Threonine and Glycine at Their Minimal Dietary Requirements for Maximal Growth
- An excess can suppress growth. Glycine can reverse this.
