Schizophrenia #

  • Some psychological characteristics of Schizophrenic phenotypes. It can be assumed that the synaptic shift happens to promote societal congruence and more directional learning.
    • Avolition: Lack of initiative or goals. If desire is present, it is without energy.
    • Alogia: A general lack of additional, unprompted content seen in speech - poverty of speech/laconic speech.
    • Reduced/flat affect
  • “The common schizophrenic language disturbance, typically involving undirected, punning speech, has been interpreted as a disturbance of the deeper image levels and a shift to the acoustic levels of memory, with the result that meaning is lost to the degree that the linguistic forms themselves are concentrated on. This is one of the ways that the broad theory can provide a foundation for practical work. Energy processes are usually assumed to be the basis for the disturbed function; for example, serum from schizophrenics disturbs the carbohydrate metabolism of chicken erythrocytes, increasing the lactate/pyruvate ratio” RPF
  • Schizophrenia as a prostaglandin deficiency disease
    • 1: All effective antischizophrenic drugs stimulate prolactin secretion and prolactin is a potent stimulator of prostaglandin synthesis;
    • 2: Schizophrenics are resistant to pain and inflammation and are free of rheumatoid arthritis and there is increasing evidence that prostaglandins play important roles in pain, inflammation, and rheumatoid arthritis
    • 3: High doses of drugs recently shown to be prostaglandin antagonists cause schizophrenia-like syndromes
  • Adenosine hypothesis of schizophrenia–opportunities for pharmacotherapy
  • Schizophrenia patients with high intelligence: A clinically distinct sub-type of schizophrenia?
    • The average schizophrenic has a lower IQ than the average person both pre- and post-onset - but there are subgroups that experience above average IQ.
      • Not sure how much of this is just statistical nonsense or if there are mechanisms behind some kind of concrete difference.
    • Those with higher IQ scored lower on negative/disorganized symptoms, obviously better functioning etc. and higher levels of manic symptoms.
  • SchizoGoogLeNet: The GoogLeNet-Based Deep Feature Extraction Design for Automatic Detection of Schizophrenia

Neurotransmitters #

Have been shown to have 2.6x levels of Brain Histamine.

  • While people associate it with high levels of dopamine, it’s more like a deficit of NMDAR activity, which changes DAT activity amongst other things.
  • Decreased expression of VGLUT1, NR1A, and AMPAR.
