Dorsal Raphe Nucleus #

  • Rostral (Subnuclei: Interfasicular, ventral, ventrolateral, and dorsal) and Caudal.

  • An increased number of cells in the lateral aspects of the dorsal raphe is characteristic of humans and other primates.

  • Contains a substantial proportion of the Serotonin innervation to the forebrain, and is particularly rich in 5-HT1A.

  • 10% of axons project to the Amygdala. R

  • Contains endogenous Opioid Receptors - electrical stimulation can potentially alleviate morphine withdrawal. R

  • Has neuroanatomic differences (along with the median RN) in those with Depression - may be decreased in size. But an increased cell density in suicide victims.
