Neurosteroids #

Endogenous/exogenous Steroid that rapidly alter neuronal excitability through interaction with ionotropic receptors and other cell surface receptors.

Synthesis #

They are synthesized in the brain from Cholesterol->Pregnenolone, and then into all other endogenous steroids. (Can also be produced from conversion peripherally-derived adrenal/gonadal steroids.) ‘Neuroactive steroids’ aren’t all produced in the brain, the qualifier being they modify neural activities.

• In rat brain/glial cultures, Adrenodoxin, CYP11A, 11β-HSD were detected. No 17β-HSD or Aldosterone Synthase. R
