(Epi)catechin
#
- A Flavonol found in dark chocolate (3 mg/g) and green tea.
- Used in combination with piperine draastically increases serum concentrations for some reason. That’s how it’s formulated at NootropicsDepot, etc.
- Enhances recovery.
- Antioxidant; improves insulin sensitivity. Increases Nitric Oxide production.
- Besides increase nitric oxide you wouldn’t feel or even really see the effects. The reduced Myostatin and potential increase of follistatin will increase the rate of muscle growth but there’s so many factors for muscle growth rate that it would be impossible to calculate how much this would help muscle growth. though in general a decrease of myostatin and follistatin will lead to better hypertrophy even if epicatechin, creatine etc only helps slightly. I just got my 180 count bottle today going to be using 250mg once a day.
- δ-Opioid Receptor agonism?

(–)-Epicatechin Supplementation Inhibits Aerobic Adaptations to Cycling Exercise in Humans
- 15 days 1 mg/kg in mice: of (–)-epicatechin supplementation alone resulted in increased exercise performance, reduced muscle fatigue, increased muscle capillarity, aerobic metbolism, and increased mitochondrial biogenesis R
- Achieved distance on treadmill: Exercise alone was +69% and (–)-epicatechin 46%, and both together +84%.
- 24 days of supplementation in rodents did not increase exercise endurance capacity, VO2 peak, muscle blood flow, or vascular conductance; however, mean arterial pressure was decreased, suggesting a mild improvement in cardiovascular function but with no transfer to exercise performance
-
(-)-Epicatechin induces mitochondrial biogenesis and markers of muscle regeneration in adults with Becker muscular dystrophy
- 50mg 2x/day for 8 weeks in 7 humans.
-
- This had me pumped until I read ‘with Becker muscular dystrophy’. But anyways, yeah… that’s a lot of markers. Just have a look though: Myf5/myogenin,MEF2a,MyoD are proteins related to skeletal muscle regeneration.
-
Plant-derived flavanol (−)epicatechin mitigates anxiety in association with elevated hippocampal monoamine and BDNF levels, but does not influence pattern separation in mice
- Looks like a prety based paper: the things measured and discussed fit right in with my current research on LTP even though there weren’t results. No effect on adult neurogenesis.
- 4 mg in mice: Increased Tyrosine Hydroxylase levels in hippocampus (1.51-fold) and cortex (1.79-fold)
-
(-)-Epicatechin stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and cell growth in C2C12 myotubes via the G-protein coupled estrogen receptor
- Here’s the dark side of COMT inhibition? Are they worse than methoxyestrogens?
- In any case I don’t think it increases serum E2.
- The effects of (−)-epicatechin on endothelial cells involve the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER)
