B12 (Coblamin) #

  • B12 deficiency leads to a higher risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s, Copper deficiency, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Impeded B12 absorption can be a symptom of SIBO R Likewise, having high B12 levels on blood tests can be a sign of SIBO, as certain bacteria produce it.
    • Lievstock is given B12 injections.
  • Forms:
    • Cyanocobalamin (synthetic)
    • Hydroxocobalamin
    • Methylcobalamin (natural). Cyano- and hydroxo- easily convert into it.
    • Adenosylcobalamin: doesn’t exist in many supplements.

Supplementation #

  • Can only absorb ~1.5-2μg per meal via the carrier-mediated intestinal absorption. There is also a decent amount of passive diffusion (like 30μg if 1mg is taken + the 2)
  • Storage of about 2-3 mg lasts for 3-5 years before deficiency! 50% in the liver, 30% of the muscle, and the rest throughout the body and the nervous system. ~0.25 μg is excreted daily.

  • Must be taken sublingually in order that it binds to Intrinsic Factor. Haptocorrin/transcobalamin-1 aka R-protein/R-factor protects B12 through the stomach, since it’s acid-sensitive, and IF binds to it after it’s released from haptocorrin in the Ileum. Then within the endosome it’s bound by transcobalamin-II and carried into the liver. Only something like 2 μg can be absorbed per hour.
  • Only liquid on Toxinless https://www.bio-alternatives.net/b12.htm (60mg $9) which is methylcobalamin
    • Pretty good; I don’t see why not. Basically every liquid on iherb is pozzed for some reason and has flavoring and stuff
