• Mechano growth factor, a splice variant of IGF-1, promotes neurogenesis in the aging mouse brain
  • Mice overexpressing have 50% more neurons at birth, extending into late life, and older mice have similar cognitive functions to young wildtype (9 months vs 1)
• C-terminal mechano growth factor protects dopamine neurons: a novel peptide that induces heme oxygenase-1
  • This shortened 24-AA peptide MGF24 upregulates Heme Oxygenase, and its blockade (via Zinc protoporphyrin IX) prevents the neuroprotection.
  • Does not activate Akt
