Scopolamine is an anticholinergic that induces cognitive deficits. It causes a large increase in ACh release, caused by blocking presynaptic inhibitory muscarinic receptors - without synthesis to match.
- Prevented by piracetam, oxiracetam, aniracetam, Pyroglutamic Acid, Phosphatidylserine, and others.
- Specifically, the decrease in ACh in the cortex and hippocampus, but nothe striatum, was prevented by oxiracetam @ 50/100 mg/kg + pyroglutamic acid @ 500/1000 mg/kg.
- Aniracetam is only effective in the hippocampus.

Piracetam, pramiracetam, oxiracetam, and Pyroglutamic Acid exhibit no affinity for musacrinic receptors and other CNS receptors (dopamine, a/b-adrenergic, serotonin, GABA, benzodiazepine etc)
- Haidut said L-PGA is dopaminergic
- However, chronic treatment with Piracetam increases mAChR density in the Frontal Cortex of aged mice.
