Neurotransmitter Receptor #
- Autoreceptors are located in the membranes of presynaptic nerve cells. Can only be sensitive to the neurotransmitters/hormones released by the neuron on which the autoreceptor sits. Their purpose is for negative feedback loops.

There are two main types of receptors:
Ionotropic receptors AKA ligand-gated Ion Channel (LGIC/LIC) #

They have a binding site, and when neurotransmitters bind to it, a channel opens in the receptor (unless it’s an antagonizing ligand), allowing Ions (Na+, Ca2+, etc.) to flow through and into the neuron, sending an action potential down the neuron.
- Not to say it’s so simplistic - Ca2+ as a second messenger for Calmodulin signalling cascades in Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors is awesome unto itself
