Neurotransmitter Receptor #

There are two main types of receptors:

Ionotropic receptors AKA ligand-gated Ion Channel (LGIC/LIC) #

  • 500

  • They have a binding site, and when neurotransmitters bind to it, a channel opens in the receptor (unless it’s an antagonizing ligand), allowing Ions (Na+, Ca2+, etc.) to flow through and into the neuron, sending an action potential down the neuron.

  • The inside of a cell is negatively charged relative to the outside. This difference is a source of potential energy. This difference (voltage) is the membrane potential.

  • The Na+K+ ATPase regulates the concentration of Na and K.
