Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback/Neuromodulation #

There is also tPBM (Photobiomodulation), tDCS (direct current stimulation) and TUS (transcranial ultrasound stimulation) Formerly known as EEG biofeedback. Supposedly Lubar’s research from the 70s and 80s is quite important.

Devices/Modalities #

EEG #

Equipment #
  • A 2-channel EEG neurofeedback machine, like the Pocket Neurobics Q-Wiz. ALTHOUGH: this is an old theory. It’s quite possibe you could maybe use a Muse or something, jerry rigged or otherwise?
    • Uses standard gluey electrodes, or their nIR or PiR headbands. Which makes me wonder what exactly you even need? Gotta look into this.
  • BioExplorer is the software, with its alpha-theta training addon (or something similar, I guess).

Sens.ai #

$300/yr membership. Or $75 for a month. Oof

  • https://sens.ai/getnow to get it for $1300. Anthony Flores who did the epic podcast on Simulation says he can do more on this than all of what he’s done on previous equipment before. Seems legit bro.
  • Has 3 electrodes detecting 50Hz+, located basically Fz, Cz, Pz. Also has 7 1024Hz+ LEDs for pbm. Loots like Fz,3,4, Cz, Pz,3,4.
  • 1024nm Red Light and at >40Hz.

Muse 2 #

Fpz is the reference electrode. Also has pulse oximetry & heart rate monitor, accelerometer, PPG+gyroscope for breath.

  • 15% off?
  • Clinical settings (remote, like just consultations, or otherwise) use Myndlift, which is a suite that generates reports of all kinds for certain goals. Not sure how much of this isn’t simply viewable in the normal app.
  • Mind Monitor is a $15 app that shows raw EEG data.

Neurosity Crown #

$899. Free hardware upgrades and electrode replacement. Not sure how different it is functionally than the Muse, but it has sensors on: CP3, C3, F5, PO3, PO4, F6, C4, CP4. Reference/bias sensors on T7 and T8:

Zengar (Neuroptimal) #

  • A much more expensive corporate type situation. I think it’s typical EEG but with tDCS. A lot of clinics seem to use this.

(r)TMS - ((Repetitive) transcranial magnetic stimulation #

cc-PAS (Paired associative stimulation) #

Induces LTP in a particular tract to strengthen information transfer in a particular direction. It’s pavlovian as hell.

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy) #

https://www.micro-pulse.com/, etc

fNIRS #

Mendi - It measures BA10 according to their research paper.

ILF - Infra-low frequency #

Concerned with extremely low frequencies of <0.5 or 0.1 Hz found in certain areas/networks like the Default Mode Network.

Focus V3 #

  • This is $420 and has a whole lot of shit:
    • tDCS (direct current)
    • tRNS (random noise stimulation)
    • tACS (alternating current)
    • tPCS (pulse current)
    • tRCS (rippled current (in alpha, to entrain and lift))
    • Nighttime lucidDreams

TAGSync #

  • = θαγ, which is just a model/theory a guy came up with, by trawling the scattered (as I know) information from the ‘advanced meditators literature’, attempting to reverse engineer the process for neuromodulation! What else am I here for?

  • Theta–gamma cross-frequency coupling relates to the level of human intelligence (2014): resting-state theta–gamma CFC in bilateral frontal and parieto-occipital areas negatively correlated with IQ scores, while theta–gamma CFC in frontal areas correlated with performance on the test of fluid intelligence.

  • *TAG Sync monitoring and feedback may be a “pointing out exercise” for the natural non-discursive mind (cf. dzogchen and rigpa *:

    • Surge of neurophysiological coherence and connectivity in the dying brain bardo moment
      • We identified a transient surge of synchronous gamma oscillations that occurred within the first 30 s after cardiac arrest and preceded isoelectric electroencephalogram. Gamma oscillations during cardiac arrest were global and highly coherent; moreover, this frequency band exhibited a striking increase in anterior–posterior-directed connectivity and tight phase-coupling to both theta and alpha waves.
    • Jeffrey Martin’s site nonsymbolic.org/publications. Has some EEG studies as well.
  • Could be a useful correlate of vigilance.

  • Binds complexty, uncertainty, and potentiality through global broad-band synchronization: Global Broad Band Synchronization over Small World Networks operating near Self-Organized Criticality in accordance with the Constructal Law of Physics

  • Modulate cross-frequency coupling between Alpha waves and Theta waves. Once that is trained, introduce Alpha/Theta-Gamma coupling.

Cheat Sheet for Neurofeedback #

Gives basic information on every major brain area. But not a lot of it is pertinent to consumer-level neurofeedback mostly concerned with the PFC…

  • Left hemisphere: Analyzing, sequential, linguistic, logial. Tends to have higher Beta waves
    • Right hemisphere: Synthesizing, holistic, comprehends cues, emotional. Tends to have higher Alpha waves.
      • The paper itself states these are mostly approximations and aren’t totally opposite by any means. Like, emotional in the right hemisphere? It’s as if they just wanted to come up with something in opposition to ’logical.’ Last time I checked the amygdala was both hemispheres (though it is not medial like the hypothalmus). (Though granted it’s the right amygdala more implicated in the negative emotions).
        • This isn’t complete bullshit? Tibetan Monk Matthieu Ricard (Dalai Lama’s french interpreter) has epic gamma levels during Metta due to significantly enhanced left prefrontal cortex activity relative to the right.
  • Frontal Lobe:

Training C4 may invoke feelings/emotions/calmness. Cz may facilitate a mixed response.
