@(McRobb et al., 2008) Androgen-induced progression of arterial calcification in apolipoprotein E-null mice is uncoupled from plaque growth and lipid levels #
- Testosterone injection increased calcification 3-4x in lesions of the innominate artery and aortic sinus. DHT increased calcification only in the innominate artery 2.4x.
- Androgen-inuced calicifcation of the innominate artery was observed with up-regulation of local AR expresion. Neither androgen influenced artery ERα or ERβ expression, but T-induced calcification in the aortic sinus was associated with downregulation of ERα.
- Androgen-induced effects were independent of sex and occured despite corresponding reductions in plaque area, DHT correlating with increased HDL levels (~.53 to .79)
- No significant correlations between plaque area and calicified area.
- No significant correlations between plaque area and calicified area.
