ATP 250 #

In the cell, it basically swims around in the cytosol.

Hydrolysis #

ATP + H2O -> ADP + Pi. ΔG = -7.3 kcal/mol. (This energy is released, not consumed)

  • The bonds between phosphate groups of ATP are broken with hydrolysis. When the terminal phosphate bond is broken is broken by addition of a water molecule, one organic phosphate molecule leaves the ATP, which then becomes ADP. In like a testing environment, it just heats up surrounding water. In a cell, its proteins harness this exergonic energy. (Endergonic reactions absorb free energy from its surroundings.)

As a neurotransmitter #

  • Excitatory or inhibitory, direct or indirect: depending on receptor subtype.
  • Induces Ca2+ wave propagation in Astrocytes.
