Hepcidin

2022-05-30: reference:

Hepcidin #

Gene: HAMP

  • It is released by the liver when iron stores are high. Binds to - inhibits - Ferroportin, causing it to internalize in complex with hepcidin (and degrade, via lysosome/ubiquitin).
    • So basically, it reduces iron release into plasma, but also Enterocyte absorption (does that retention fuck up the GI? I reckon it does) where tf does the iron go?
    • Does that lysososmal degradation have something to do with ’endolysosomal deacidification'?
      • Well, deacidification would decrease their efficacy. Since it’s ATP H+ pump-dependent, it would be observed with a broad decline in energy.
  • Hypoxia decreases its synthesis.
  • Astrocyte hepcidin is a key factor in LPS-induced neuronal apoptosis
  • M1 microglia, via the secretion of IL-6.
