Hepcidin #
Gene: HAMP
- It is released by the liver when iron stores are high. Binds to - inhibits - Ferroportin, causing it to internalize in complex with hepcidin (and degrade, via lysosome/ubiquitin).
- So basically, it reduces iron release into plasma, but also Enterocyte absorption (does that retention fuck up the GI? I reckon it does) where tf does the iron go?
- Does that lysososmal degradation have something to do with ’endolysosomal deacidification'?
- Well, deacidification would decrease their efficacy. Since it’s ATP H+ pump-dependent, it would be observed with a broad decline in energy.
- Hypoxia decreases its synthesis.
- Astrocyte hepcidin is a key factor in LPS-induced neuronal apoptosis
- M1 microglia, via the secretion of IL-6.
